Loolego, California facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Loolego was once a village of the Yurok people in Humboldt County, California. It was located near the Lower Klamath River, about two miles (3.2 km) upstream from where the Klamath and Trinity rivers meet. The name Lo'-o-le'-go means "where they build a fish weir," which tells us a lot about how important fishing was to the people living there.

What Was Loolego?

Loolego was an important Yurok settlement. It was known for its people taking part in the deerskin ceremony at a place called wē-itspūs. This suggests that Loolego was a significant and active community.

Life in the Village

The Yurok people lived in villages like Loolego for many years. They built homes and sweat lodges, which were special buildings used for ceremonies and purification. Fishing was a very important activity, as suggested by the village's name.

How Loolego Changed

By the early 1900s, Loolego had changed a lot. A researcher visiting in 1909 noted that about 30 years earlier, there were still signs of the village, like house pits and a sweat lodge foundation.

However, a type of mining called hydraulic placer mining took place in the 1880s. This powerful mining method used strong jets of water to wash away soil. Sadly, this mining washed away the ground where Loolego once stood, leaving only bedrock.

Historian Sherburne F. Cook also wrote that the number of people living in Loolego quickly went down after more settlers arrived in the area. This shows how outside changes affected the Yurok communities.
