Loope is a small, quiet place in Alpine County, California. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it does not have its own local government like a city or town. Loope is located near Monitor Creek. It sits high up in the mountains, at about 6,188 feet (1,886 meters) above sea level.

Loope's History and Names

Loope has had a few different names over the years. It was once called Loopeville and before that, Monitor. These names tell us a bit about its past.

How Loope Got Its Name

The area was first named Monitor because of a nearby mine called the Monitor Mine. The mine itself was named after a famous ship from the American Civil War. This ship was known for its strong design.

Later, the community's name changed to Loope. This was done to honor a person named Dr. Loope. He played an important role in bringing the mining industry back to life in the area. He helped attract new money and investments from the eastern part of the United States. This helped the local economy grow.

Post Offices in Loope

Like many communities, Loope had its own post offices. A post office operated under the name Monitor from 1863 to 1888. Later, a post office named Loope served the community from 1898 to 1908. These offices were important for sending and receiving mail in the remote area.
