The Story of Lopez
Lopez got its name from Lopez Creek, a nearby stream. The creek itself was named after a road builder named John R. Lopez.
Early Days and Industries
Before it was called Lopez, the village had a different name: Tar Bridge. This was because there was a bridge covered in tar that crossed Lopez Creek.
In 1886, a sawmill was built in Lopez, which was important for processing wood. In the same year, the railroad was extended to Lopez, making it easier to transport goods and people. Another mill was built just two years later, in 1888. Companies like Trexler and Turrell even built special dams to help float timber down the creek to their mill.
A factory that made clothespins opened in Lopez in 1894. Sadly, it burned down only two years later, but the community quickly rebuilt it. By 1903, Lopez had grown quite a bit, with about 1,000 people living there.
