The Lophocereus marginatus is a type of plant in the Cactaceae family, which includes all cacti. It is often called the Mexican fencepost cactus. This cactus grows tall and straight, like a column.
These cacti grow slowly. They can reach about 12 feet (3.7 meters) tall. Some even grow up to 20 feet (6.1 meters)! Their stems are usually 3 to 4 inches (7.6 to 10 cm) wide. Each stem has 5 to 7 ribs running along it.
The cactus has a main spine that is about 3/8 inch (1 cm) long. It also has 5 to 9 smaller spines around it. These spines are a bit yellowish. People sometimes use pieces of this cactus to make living fences. This is because its spines are not as big or dangerous as those on some other cacti.
Where the Mexican Fencepost Cactus Lives
This amazing cactus is originally from Mexico. It grows naturally in many parts of that country.
