Scientific classification

The senita cactus (scientific name: Lophocereus schottii) is a special type of cactus. You can find it growing in the warm, dry areas of southern Arizona in the United States and north-western Mexico. It is very common in places like Baja California and Sonora. This unique cactus is known for its interesting relationship with a tiny moth.

What is the Senita Cactus?

The senita cactus is a tall, column-shaped cactus. It can grow many stems that branch out from its base. These stems are covered in spines, like most cacti. When the senita cactus is young, its stems are usually smooth and green. As it gets older, the top parts of its stems change. They become covered in long, bristly, gray or white spines, almost like a beard! This is why it's sometimes called the "old man cactus" in some places.

A Special Partnership: Cactus and Moth

The senita cactus has an amazing partnership with a small insect called the senita moth. This is a perfect example of something called mutualism. Mutualism means that two different living things help each other to survive.

How They Help Each Other

The senita moth is the only animal that helps the senita cactus make seeds. This moth is nocturnal, which means it is active at night. When the cactus flowers open at night, the senita moth flies from flower to flower. As it visits the flowers, it picks up pollen and carries it to other flowers. This process is called pollination, and it's how the cactus can make new seeds.

In return, the senita cactus provides a safe home for the moth's babies. The female senita moth lays her eggs inside the cactus flowers. When the eggs hatch, the tiny moth caterpillars eat some of the cactus seeds. But they don't eat all of them! They leave enough seeds so the cactus can still grow new plants. This way, both the cactus and the moth benefit from their special connection.

Where the Senita Cactus Lives

The senita cactus loves hot, dry places. It grows best in the desert, especially in sandy or rocky soils. Its main home is in the Sonoran Desert, which stretches across parts of Arizona and Mexico. It can handle very hot temperatures and long periods without rain, thanks to its special adaptations as a cactus.
