Loral Ashley O'Hara, born on May 3, 1983, is an American engineer and a NASA astronaut. She has traveled to space and lived on the International Space Station (ISS).

Early Life and Education

Loral O'Hara was born in Houston, Texas. She grew up in Sugar Land, Texas. She went to Clements High School.

She studied aerospace engineering at the University of Kansas. She earned her bachelor's degree in 2005. Later, she got a master's degree from Purdue University in 2009. While in college, she took part in a special program. This program let her fly in a plane that created a feeling of weightlessness.

Engineering Adventures

Before becoming an astronaut, Loral O'Hara worked as an engineer. She joined the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in 2009. There, she worked on amazing underwater vehicles.

She helped upgrade a special submarine called Alvin. This submarine explores the deep ocean. She also worked with a robot vehicle named Jason. Jason is controlled from a ship and can explore places too deep for people.

Becoming a NASA Astronaut

Loral O'Hara always dreamed of space. She completed internships at NASA centers. In June 2017, NASA chose her to be an astronaut candidate. She started her training in August of that year.

On January 10, 2020, she officially became a NASA astronaut. This meant she was ready for spaceflight.

Journey to Space

NASA announced in July 2022 that Loral O'Hara would fly to the International Space Station. She was part of a mission called Expedition 68. However, plans changed due to an issue with another spacecraft.

Her crew then shifted to a different mission, Soyuz MS-24. She launched aboard the Soyuz MS-24 spacecraft on September 15, 2023. She returned to Earth on April 6, 2024. During her time in space, she lived and worked on the International Space Station.

Hobbies and Interests

Loral O'Hara has many exciting hobbies. She is a private pilot, which means she can fly planes. She is also trained to help people in emergencies.

She loves outdoor activities like whitewater rafting, surfing, and diving. She also enjoys flying, sailing, skiing, and hiking. For quieter times, she likes reading and painting.
