The Lord-Dane House is a really old and special house in Alfred, Maine. It was built a long time ago, around 1803. It was a country getaway for a ship's captain. This house is a great example of a building style called Federal architecture. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 because it's so important.

What Does the Lord-Dane House Look Like?

The Lord-Dane House is located in Alfred, Maine. It sits at the corner of Federal and Gore Streets. Federal Street used to be the main road connecting the village to the northern parts of the town.

The House's Design and Shape

The house is a large, two-story building made of wood. It has an L-shape and looks like it grew over time. The main part of the house connects to other sections. These sections used to be a storehouse and a barn for carriages. Now, they are all part of the main house.

The main part of the house has a sloped roof and a chimney in the middle. Its outside walls are covered with clapboard siding. There are two main doors, one facing south and one facing east.

How the House Changed Over Time

From the main part, a section with a pointed roof extends to the west. This section then connects to another similar part at a right angle. That part goes south and connects to the old carriage barn. The barn's big door openings have been changed to look like false doors.

Some parts of the house's outside show changes from the 1800s. These changes include styles like Greek Revival and Italianate. This means the house was updated to look more modern for its time.

Who Lived in the Lord-Dane House?

The house was built around 1803 by a man named Tobias Lord. He was a very rich ship's captain and a merchant. A merchant is someone who buys and sells goods. Tobias Lord worked out of Kennebunk, Maine.

The Lord Family's Time in the House

Tobias Lord's second wife, Hepzibah Conant, was from Alfred. After building this house, Tobias and Hepzibah moved to Alfred. Tobias Lord passed away in 1808, and Hepzibah in 1816. Their children sold the house in 1821.

The Dane Family's Time in the House

The most famous person to live in the house in the 1800s was Nathan Dane. He was a lumber merchant, meaning he sold wood. He was also a banker, working with money. Nathan Dane lived in the house from 1830 to 1868.

Nathan Dane also served in the state senate. A state senate is part of the government that makes laws for a state. He was also the state treasurer in the 1860s. A state treasurer is in charge of the state's money.
