After his studies, Lord Arthur began a career in the military. In 1803, he became a captain and then a major in the local army, called the Monmouth and Brecon Militia. This group was led by his older brother, the 6th Duke. In 1804, he joined the main British Army as a lieutenant.
Political Career

At the same time, he was also made a "deputy lieutenant" for Monmouthshire and Breconshire. This was an important role in local government.
While serving as an MP, Lord Arthur continued his military career. In 1806, he became a captain in the 4th West India Regiment. Later that year, he moved to the 91st Foot regiment.
