Lord Dingwall facts for kids
Lord Dingwall is a special noble title from Scotland. It's like being a "Lord" or "Lady" and is part of the Peerage of Scotland, which is a list of important noble families and their titles in Scotland.
The title of Lord Dingwall was first created in 1584 for a person named Andrew Keith. This means he was the very first Lord Dingwall.
In 1609, the title was created again, this time for Sir Richard Preston. When a title is "created again," it means it was given to someone else, sometimes with new rules about who can inherit it. Sir Richard Preston was also given other important titles, like Baron Dunmore and Earl of Desmond in Ireland. These titles were meant to pass down to his male children.
When Sir Richard Preston passed away in 1628, his Irish titles ended because he didn't have any sons to inherit them. However, his Scottish title, Lord Dingwall, went to his daughter, Elizabeth. She became the second Lady Dingwall.
Elizabeth, the second Lady Dingwall, married a very important person named James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormonde. Their oldest son, Thomas Butler, also became a Lord in England, known as Baron Butler. Sadly, Thomas passed away before his parents. So, when Elizabeth and James passed away, their grandson, who was the second Duke of Ormonde, became the third Lord Dingwall.
Losing and Getting Back the Title
In 1715, the second Duke of Ormonde had a serious legal problem and lost his titles. This is called being "attainted," and it meant his titles were taken away.
Many years later, in 1871, a man named Francis Cowper, 7th Earl Cowper worked hard to get the Lordship of Dingwall and the Barony of Butler back. He was successful, and the titles were "restored" to him. He then became the fourth Lord Dingwall. Francis Cowper was a descendant of Thomas Butler, the Earl of Ossory.
Later, in 1880, Francis Cowper also inherited another title from his mother, becoming the eighth Baron Lucas of Crudwell. If you want to know more about the history of the Lordship of Dingwall and the Barony of Butler after this time, you can look up the Baron Lucas of Crudwell title.
