Lord Evelyn James Stuart (born 7 May 1773 – died 16 August 1842) was an important British soldier and politician. He was a member of the Tory political party, which was one of the main political groups in Britain at the time.

Lord Evelyn came from a very important family. His father was John Stuart, the first Marquess of Bute. His grandfather was John Stuart, the third Earl of Bute, who had even been the Prime Minister of Britain! His mother was Charlotte Jane.

A Career in Politics

Lord Evelyn James Stuart was a member of the House of Commons. This is like the main meeting place for politicians in Britain, where laws are made.

Representing Cardiff

In February 1794, Lord Evelyn was chosen to represent a place called Cardiff Boroughs in Parliament. He took over this role after his older brother, Lord Mount Stuart, passed away. Even though he was elected, he couldn't officially start his job until his 21st birthday in June of that year.

He continued to represent Cardiff Boroughs until 1802. After that, his younger brother, Lord William Stuart, took his place.

Returning to Parliament

Later, in 1814, Lord Evelyn was elected again to represent Cardiff Boroughs. He held this position until 1818. After that, another family member, his nephew Lord Patrick Crichton-Stuart, became the representative for Cardiff.

A Life in the Army

Besides his political work, Lord Evelyn James Stuart also had a long career in the British Army.

Early Military Ranks

He first joined the army as a Lieutenant in 1791. A lieutenant is a junior officer. Later, he became a Captain in the Grenadier Guards. A captain is a more senior officer who leads a company of soldiers.

Rising Through the Ranks

In 1797, he became a Major, which is an even higher rank. Later that same year, he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel. A lieutenant-colonel is a very important officer, often in charge of a large group of soldiers. In 1805, he was promoted again to Brevet Colonel. A colonel is a high-ranking officer in the army.

Later Life

Lord Evelyn James Stuart never married. He passed away in August 1842 when he was 69 years old. He was buried at West Norwood Cemetery.
