Lord John Frederick Gordon Hallyburton (born August 15, 1799 – died September 29, 1878) was a Scottish naval officer. He also served as a Member of Parliament, which means he was elected to help make laws for the country.
John Frederick Gordon was born in 1799. His father was George Gordon, the Earl of Aboyne. John joined the Royal Navy, which is the United Kingdom's navy. He worked his way up through the ranks.
By August 4, 1836, he had become a Captain. This was an important leadership role on a ship.
Family Life
On August 24, 1836, John Frederick Gordon married Lady Augusta Kennedy-Erskine. Lady Augusta was a widow and had three children from her first marriage. She was also a daughter of King William IV.
John and Augusta did not have any children of their own. His stepchildren were:
- William Henry Kennedy Erskine (1828–1870), who became a captain in the army.
- Wilhelmina Kennedy Erskine (1830–1906), who married the Earl of Munster.
- Augusta Millicent Anne Mary Kennedy Erskine (1831–1895), who also married and had children.
Soon after his marriage, John was honored by the King. He was made a Knight Grand Cross in the Royal Guelphic Order. He also became a Lord of the Bedchamber to the King, which was a special role in the royal household.
Political Career
In 1841, John Frederick Gordon was elected to Parliament for Forfarshire, a region in Scotland. He took over this role from his uncle, Lord Douglas Gordon-Hallyburton.
In 1843, he also inherited his uncle's estates. Because of this, he added "Hallyburton" to his name, becoming Lord John Frederick Gordon Hallyburton. He was re-elected to Parliament in 1847. He continued to serve until the election in 1852.
Even after his time in Parliament, Lord Gordon Hallyburton continued to advance in his naval career.
- On May 12, 1857, he was promoted to Rear-Admiral.
- On November 4, 1863, he became a Vice-Admiral.
- Finally, on April 8, 1868, he reached the highest rank of full Admiral.
He lived at Hallyburton House, which was near a town called Coupar Angus. He passed away on September 29, 1878.
