Lord William Gordon (1744–1823) was a Scottish nobleman. He was a member of the important Gordon family.

Early Life and Family

Lord William Gordon was born in 1744. His father was Cosmo Gordon, 3rd Duke of Gordon. His mother was Lady Catherine Gordon. She was the daughter of William Gordon, 2nd Earl of Aberdeen.

William had an older brother named Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon. He also had a younger brother, Lord George Gordon. Lord George Gordon was known for leading some famous protests in London. William also had a sister, Lady Susan Gordon.

Military Service

In 1778, Lord William Gordon joined the military. He became a lieutenant-colonel. This was in a special army group called 'the Northern regiment of Fencible Men'. This group was also known as Gordon's Fencibles. His brother, Alexander, had started this regiment.

Marriage and Family Life

Lord William Gordon later married a woman named the Honourable Frances Ingram-Shepheard. She was the daughter of Charles Ingram, 9th Viscount of Irvine.

Lord William and Frances had one daughter together. Her name was Frances Gordon. She never married. Lord William's wife, Frances, passed away in 1841.

Lord William Gordon had a son named William Conway Gordon (1798–1882). Lord William made sure his son received a good education. He also provided him with money to live comfortably.

William Conway Gordon worked as an aide-de-camp (ADC). He served General Sir Peregrine Maitland. General Maitland was a distant relative of Lord William's wife, Frances.

In 1815, William Conway Gordon joined the Bengal Army. He was part of the 53rd Native Infantry. In 1828, he married Louisa Vanrenen in Bengal. She was the daughter of Brigadier-General J. Vanrenen.

William Conway Gordon and Louisa had four children. Their names were William George Conway Gordon, Francis Ingram Conway-Gordon, Lewis Conway-Gordon, and Charles Van Renen Conway-Gordon.

William Conway Gordon was promoted to lieutenant in 1851. He became a captain in 1854. In 1857, he married Jane Miller Dickson. He passed away the next year, in 1858. Jane Gordon is buried in the English Cemetery, Florence.
