About Catherine Gordon
Her Early Life
Lady Catherine was born on October 20, 1718. Her birthplace was Haddo House near Tarves in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Her father was William Gordon, 2nd Earl of Aberdeen. Her mother was Lady Susan Murray.
Catherine had several brothers and sisters. Her older brother was George Gordon, 3rd Earl of Aberdeen. She also had half-siblings from her father's other marriages. These included William Gordon and Alexander Gordon, Lord Rockville.
Her family was well-known in Scotland. Her grandparents were George Gordon, 1st Earl of Aberdeen, and Anne Lockhart. Her other grandparents were John Murray, 1st Duke of Atholl, and Lady Katherine Douglas-Hamilton.
Her First Marriage
On September 3, 1741, Catherine married Cosmo George Gordon, 3rd Duke of Gordon. The wedding took place in Dunkeld. Cosmo was the oldest son of Alexander Gordon, 2nd Duke of Gordon.
Catherine and Cosmo had six children together:
- Lady Susan Gordon (died 1814): She married twice and had children from both marriages.
- Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon (1743–1827): He later married Jane Maxwell.
- Lord William Gordon (1744–1823): He married Hon. Frances Ingram-Shepheard and had one daughter.
- Lady Anne Gordon (1748–?): She married Reverend Alexander Chalmers.
- Lady Catharine Gordon (1751–?): She married Thomas Booker.
- Lord George Gordon (1751–1793): He never married.
The Duke of Gordon passed away in 1752. After his death, Catherine lived in Edinburgh for a time.
Her Second Marriage
In March 1756, Catherine married again. Her second husband was Staats Long Morris. He was an American soldier who later became a British Member of Parliament (MP). Staats Morris was the son of Lewis Morris.
In 1759, Catherine helped her new husband. She worked to create a new army regiment for him. This helped his military career. Staats and Catherine later traveled to America in 1768–1769. After their travels, they returned to Scotland. They made their home at Huntly Lodge.
Staats Long Morris became an MP for Elgin Burghs in 1774. This was largely because of the help from Catherine's son, the new Duke of Gordon.
