The Loren L. Chadwick Cottages are two small, historic houses in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They are located in the Linden Hills neighborhood. This area is close to two large lakes, Bde Maka Ska and Lake Harriet. These cottages are important because they show a type of simple summer home architecture from the early 1900s.
History of the Cottages
Building Summer Homes
In the late 1800s, a real estate developer named Louis F. Menage created a plan for this area. He called it "Cottage City." He wanted to attract people who wished to build small summer homes near the lakes. So, he made the land plots smaller than usual.
Loren L. Chadwick built these two cottages in 1902. Each cottage cost about $300 to build. They were quite small, measuring about 16 feet by 30 feet. They also had screened porches. These porches were perfect for enjoying cool breezes from the nearby lakes during summer.
From Rentals to Historic Homes
For over ten years, the two cottages were rented out. People used them as summer getaways. Later, individual owners bought each cottage. In 1972, a new owner connected the two cottages. They added a new section to the back of the houses.
The Loren L. Chadwick Cottages were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This means they are officially recognized as important historical buildings. They are a great example of early cottage architecture in Minneapolis. Even though they are simple, they have special details. These details are called Carpenter Gothic style. You can see them on the decorative boards under the roofs of the gables and porches.
