Lorenzo Casanova Ruiz (born March 14, 1844, in Alcoy; died March 23, 1900, in Alicante) was a Spanish painter and art teacher. He was known as a costumbrista painter, which means he often painted scenes from everyday life or important historical moments.

Becoming an Artist

Lorenzo Casanova Ruiz came from a humble family; his father was a butcher. He started his art studies at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos in Valencia.

Even though his family didn't have much money, Lorenzo was very talented. He received a special scholarship from the "Diputación Provincial de Alicante." This scholarship allowed him to continue his studies at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. There, he learned from a famous artist named Federico de Madrazo.

Studying in Italy

In 1873, Lorenzo received another scholarship, which helped him travel to Italy. Italy was a very important place for art at that time. He studied at the Accademia Chigiana. While in Italy, he sent his paintings back to Spain to be shown at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts.

After his scholarship ended, Lorenzo decided to stay in Italy for two more years. He supported himself by painting, showing how dedicated he was to his art.

A Teacher and Mentor

In 1879, Lorenzo's father passed away, and he returned to Alicante, Spain. He began working as an art teacher. Eventually, he opened his own art school, which he called "Academia de Casanova."

Many students who later became famous artists studied at his academy. Some of them include Lorenzo Aguirre, Andrés Buforn, Fernando Cabrera Cantó, Lorenzo Pericás, and Emilio Varela Isabel. Lorenzo also became the Director of the local School of Fine Arts. In 1894, he organized a big art show for the region and helped judge the artworks.

Recognition and Family

Lorenzo Casanova Ruiz was recognized for his contributions to art. He was made a Knight in the Order of Isabella the Catholic, which is a special honor in Spain. He was also a member of the Academia San Fernando, the same art school where he had studied in Madrid.

He was married to María Teresa Miró Moltó. Her nephew, Gabriel Miró, later became a well-known poet.
