Fernando Cabrera Cantó (1866–1937) was a talented Spanish artist. He was both a painter and a sculptor. His art explored many different feelings, from happy and funny scenes to more serious and sometimes sad ones. He also loved painting beautiful landscapes.

Early Life and Art School

Fernando started learning art in Valencia, Spain. He went to a special art school called the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos. There, he had a teacher named Lorenzo Casanova, who was also from his hometown of Alcoy.

After Valencia, Fernando continued his art studies in Madrid. He learned from another artist named Casto Plasencia. He even got to travel to Italy to study art! This trip was possible because he received a scholarship, which is like a grant, from the Alicante Provincial Council.

Working as an Artist and Teacher

Fernando Cabrera Cantó worked with an architect named Vicente Pascual Pastor. They helped decorate a famous building in Alcoy called the Casa del Pavo. This building is known for its beautiful Art Nouveau style. Fernando later had his own art studio in the front part of this very building.

For many years, Fernando was also a teacher. He taught at the School of Arts and Crafts. He helped many young artists learn and grow. Some of his students became famous artists themselves. These included Julio Pascual [es], who was known for his enamel and iron art, and José Mataix Monllor [es]. Other students were Edmundo Jordá [es] and Agustín Espí Carbonell [es], who was a decorative artist.

Awards and Recognition

Fernando's art was recognized with many awards. He took part in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts (Spain). In 1890, he won a Second Class prize for his painting called "Huérfanos" (Orphans). Later, in 1906, he won a First Class prize for his work "Al Abismo" (To the Abyss...).

His art was also shown around the world. He won awards at the Exposition Universelle (1900) in Paris, France. He also received an award at the Panama–Pacific International Exposition in 1915. This big event took place in San Francisco, USA.

Artistic Style and Themes

Fernando Cabrera Cantó's paintings were influenced by several other great artists from the 1800s. Some of these artists included Mariano Fortuny, Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench, and Eduardo Rosales.

Many of his paintings showed important messages about society. They made people think about different social issues. Other works were simpler scenes of everyday life, known as genre paintings. He also created beautiful landscapes and detailed portraits of people.
