Lorenzo Maitani (born around 1275, died 1330) was a talented Italian architect and sculptor. He is best known for his important work on the front of the Orvieto Cathedral in Italy. He was in charge of both building and decorating this famous church.
Who Was Lorenzo Maitani?
Lorenzo Maitani first became well-known in the city of Siena. In 1308, he was asked to help with the construction of the Orvieto Cathedral. This church was very tall and wide, which caused some unexpected building problems.
In 1310, he was given the important title of capomaestro (which means "master builder") for the cathedral. This made him the main person in charge of the entire project. He also became responsible for bridges and other public buildings in the area.

The design of the cathedral's front, or façade, is seen as Maitani's most important artistic creation. Even though it's hard to know exactly which sculptures he made himself, his artistic vision guided the whole look.
Two special carvings, called "Scenes from Genesis" and "The Last Judgment," are thought to be his work. These are delicate bas-reliefs, which means the sculptures are carved so they stick out only a little from the flat surface. They are connected by a climbing vine, which shows the influence of French Gothic art.
Other sculptures believed to be by Maitani include the bronze "Eagle of St. John" and the "Angel of St. Matthew." These pieces show his skill in working with metal.
