He started his career in business with a wallpaper factory. Later, he became involved in real estate. In 1985, he joined the board of directors at Real Madrid, which is like being on the club's main committee.
His Family Life
Lorenzo Sanz was married to María Luz Durán Muñoz. They had five children together. Many of his children also became involved in sports:
- His first son, Lorenzo, played basketball for Real Madrid's main team.
- His sons Paco and Fernando were both professional football players. Fernando even played for Real Madrid and Málaga.

Leading Real Madrid
Lorenzo Sanz was a director at Real Madrid for ten years, from 1985 to 1995. He became the President of Real Madrid on November 26, 1995. He took over when the club was facing some challenges.
Winning the Champions League
As president, Sanz worked hard to improve the team. He brought in talented players like Davor Šuker and Predrag Mijatović. His efforts paid off, and Real Madrid won the UEFA Champions League twice! They won in 1998 and again in 2000. These were big wins because Real Madrid had not won the Champions League since 1966.
After these victories, Sanz decided to hold an early election for the club presidency in 2000. However, he lost to Florentino Pérez and left the presidency on July 16, 2000. He later tried two more times to become president of Real Madrid but was not successful.
Other Football Ventures
After leaving Real Madrid, Lorenzo Sanz continued to be involved in football.
Owning Málaga CF
In July 2006, Sanz bought Málaga CF, another Spanish football club. He owned the club for four years. In 2010, he sold Málaga CF to an investor from Qatar.
Interest in Other Clubs
Sanz also showed interest in buying other football clubs. For example, in 2005, he tried to buy the Italian club Parma. He even made an initial payment, but the deal did not go through. In 2008, there were reports that he was looking to buy another Italian club, Bari.
Later Life and Passing
Lorenzo Sanz was the father-in-law of Míchel Salgado, a well-known former player for Real Madrid and the Spanish national team. Sanz's sons, Paco and Fernando, also became professional footballers. When Lorenzo Sanz owned Málaga CF, he made his son Fernando the president of that club.
