Lorenzo Jules Staelens is a famous Belgian football player and manager. He was born on April 30, 1964. He recently coached the Dutch club HSV Hoek.

Lorenzo started his career playing as a defensive midfielder. This means he helped protect the defense and win the ball back. Later in his career, he played as a sweeper, which is a defender who "sweeps up" any loose balls. He scored over 100 goals in his career!

Staelens played for the Belgian national team in three different World Cups. He also played in the Euro 2000 tournament, which was held in his home country.

Playing for Clubs

Lorenzo Staelens was born in Lauwe. He began his professional football journey with K.V. Kortrijk when he was 23 years old. He played very well for two seasons there. His strong performances caught the eye of top teams in Belgium, especially Club Brugge KV.

At Club Brugge, Lorenzo formed an amazing midfield team with Franky Van der Elst. They played together for almost ten years! Staelens played a total of 369 games for Club Brugge. He scored 105 goals during his time with the club.

When he was 34, Lorenzo moved to another big Belgian club, R.S.C. Anderlecht. By this time, he was often playing in defense. He was a key player in helping Anderlecht win two championships in a row, in 2000 and 2001. In 1999, he won the Belgian Golden Shoe, which is a big award for the best player in Belgium.

He left Anderlecht before his last year was finished. In early 2001, he moved to Japan to play for Ōita Trinita. He retired from playing football shortly after.

Becoming a Coach

After he stopped playing, Lorenzo Staelens started a new career as a coach. His first coaching job was with R.E. Mouscron. He also spent a short time at V.C. Eendracht Aalst.

Later, he returned to his old club, Kortrijk, but this time as their general manager. He went back to coaching on the field in 2007. He became an assistant coach at K.S.V. Roeselare. He continued as an assistant coach for many years, including with Cercle KSV.

Playing for Belgium

Lorenzo Staelens was chosen to play for the Belgian team in the 1990 FIFA World Cup. He was still a new player on the international stage. He played in one game during that World Cup, which Belgium lost 2–1 to Spain.

After that, Staelens became a very important player for the national team. He also played in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups. He was part of the team for UEFA Euro 2000 as well. In total, he played 70 games for Belgium and scored 8 goals.
