Exploring Los Realejos: A Tale of Two Areas
Los Realejos is divided into two main parts. These are known as Realejo Alto (Upper Realejo) and Realejo Bajo (Lower Realejo).
How the Areas Are Different
These two areas are quite different from each other. A large, deep ravine separates them. They also have different histories. During the Spanish conquest of Tenerife, the native people, called Guanches, lived in the lower area. The Spanish soldiers, however, took over the upper area.
Each area has its own beautiful Baroque church. These churches were built soon after the Spanish conquest was finished. The municipality was first known as Realejo de Arriba.
Villages within the Municipality
The local council governs Los Realejos and several smaller villages. These villages include Palo Blanco, Cruz Santa, Mocan, Icod de Alto, and Tigaiga. Over time, more people have moved here, and more homes have been built. This has made the villages blend together, so they now look like one big town.
Beaches and Important Places
Los Realejos has some notable beaches. Playa de El Socorro is the most popular beach. Both local people and tourists love to visit it.
Other beaches like Playa de Castro and Playa de Fajana are also worth mentioning. They are a bit harder to reach than El Socorro. Los Realejos is also home to the Tenerife News, an English language newspaper.
The town also has the Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This is a very important religious site in northern Tenerife.
