History of Los Ybanez

Los Ybanez was created in the late 1970s. It officially became a city in 1983. It was one of several towns in Texas that were formed for a special reason. These towns were set up to allow certain types of sales that were not allowed in nearby larger towns or cities.

In Texas, many counties are "dry," meaning they don't allow the sale of alcoholic drinks. However, local governments can choose to allow these sales through special elections. The western part of Texas has historically been mostly dry. As bigger cities grew, some areas started allowing sales in clubs or stores.

The Ybanez family founded Los Ybanez. Israel G. and Mary Ybanez bought land from the state of Texas. This land had been used by soldiers during World War II. The Ybanez family moved to this land. They lived in the houses there to establish residency.

Later, they officially made it a town. They even got a United States Post Office. This allowed them to legally sell certain items that were restricted elsewhere. The store they opened still operates today. It is a drive-through business and only accepts cash.

The Ybanez family also started a local radio station, KYMI. This station was used to advertise for their store. KYMI later changed its name to KJJT. It also changed its radio frequency in 1996.
