Lothair Udo I was an important person in the Middle Ages. He was a Count of Stade, a region in what is now Germany. He lived from about 950 to 994.

Lothair Udo I is sometimes mixed up with his nephew, who was also named Lothair Udo. His nephew was a different kind of leader, called a Margrave.

Lothair Udo I: A Medieval Count

Lothair Udo I was the son of Henry I the Bald, Count of Stade. His mother was Judith von der Wetterau. Her grandfather was Gebhard, Duke of Lorraine.

A writer named Thietmar of Merseburg wrote about Lothair Udo I. He described how Lothair Udo I and two of his uncles died. They were captured by pirates along with another Count named Adalgar.

Thietmar's writings say that Lothair Udo I was killed in a battle. This battle was against the Vikings.

Family Life

Lothair Udo I married a woman whose name is not known. She was the daughter of Siegbert, who was a Count of Liesgau.

Lothair Udo I and his wife had two children:

  • Henry III von Stade: He became a church official, a Canon, at Hildesheim Cathedral after the year 1002.
  • Udo von Stade: He lived from 986 to 1040. He became a Count of Liesgau and Rittegau.

Udo von Stade married a woman named Bertrada. Her family is not known. Their son, Dietrich I von Kahleberg, was killed in a battle. This battle was called the Battle of Werben and happened on September 10, 1056. Dietrich had married a woman also named Bertrada. She was the daughter of Dirk III, Count of Holland.
