Growing Up and Starting Football
Lotta Schelin was born in Stockholm, Sweden. When she was two years old, her family moved to Kållered, near Gothenburg. She grew up there with her parents, Kjell and Nina.
Lotta started playing football for Kållereds SK with her older sister, Camilla. She also played for other youth teams like Hällesåkers IF and Mölnlycke IF. Besides football, Lotta was good at other sports. She enjoyed table-tennis, track and field, and snowboarding.
When she was a teenager, Lotta had problems with her spine. Doctors told her she might have to stop playing sports. But Lotta worked hard on strengthening her body. She recovered by the time she was 17. She has said that her sister Camilla and another player, Tina Nordlund, were important role models for her.
Playing for Clubs
Starting with Göteborg FC
In 2001, when Lotta was 17, she started her senior club career. She joined Landvetter FC, which is now known as Göteborg FC. In her first season, she scored eight goals in 19 games.
Lotta had an injury in 2002 that kept her out for a long time. But she came back strong in 2003. In 2004, she was named "Breakthrough Player of the Year" after scoring 14 goals in 15 games. In 2006, she scored 21 goals in 21 league games. She won many awards that year, including Forward of the Year and Player of the Year. She was also the top goalscorer in the Damallsvenskan league. She kept her top scorer title in 2007 with 26 goals. Lotta played over 120 league matches for Göteborg.
Success with Lyon
In 2008, Lotta Schelin decided to join Lyon, a club in France. This was a big move for her career. She became one of the highest-paid female players at the time.
At Lyon, Lotta became a key player. She helped the team win many titles. They won the Division 1 Féminine league title eight times in a row! They also won the Coupe de France Féminine five times.
One of her biggest achievements with Lyon was winning the UEFA Women's Champions League three times (in 2011, 2012, and 2016). In 2011, winning the Champions League was a very proud moment for her. In the 2012–13 season, Lotta was in amazing form. She was the top scorer in the French league with 24 goals in just 16 games. She was also named the "French Player of the Year."
Lotta left Lyon in 2016 as the club's all-time top goalscorer. She had scored 225 goals in 225 games! She also held the record for the most Champions League goals for a single club.
Returning to Sweden with Rosengård
After her successful time in France, Lotta returned to Sweden. In June 2016, she joined FC Rosengård, a top Swedish team. She made her debut for Rosengård sooner than expected and even scored a goal in her first game. She played for Rosengård until her retirement.
Playing for Sweden
Lotta Schelin first played for the Swedish national team in March 2004. She quickly became an important player. She played in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
She helped Sweden win a bronze medal at the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany. She was even named to the "All-Star Team" for the tournament. In 2012, she became a co-captain for the national team.
In 2013, Sweden hosted the UEFA Women's Euro 2013 tournament. Lotta was the top scorer of the tournament with five goals. In October 2014, she scored her 73rd goal for Sweden. This broke the national record for most goals scored by a female player.
Lotta was a key player in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. Sweden reached the gold medal match, but they lost to Germany. Even though they didn't win gold, Lotta was very proud to win a silver medal.
How Lotta Played
Lotta Schelin was known for her unique playing style. She described herself as "not a typical center-forward." This meant she liked to move around the field, sometimes dropping back or going wide. She did this to find open space and help her team. She always thought about the team first, not just scoring goals herself. She believed that danger could come from any player on the team.
Her coaches noticed that she became even better with the ball after joining Lyon. She kept her speed and was great at one-on-one situations against defenders. Even though she was tall and slim, she was also very strong. Opponents found her tough to play against.
Because she was a tall, skilled, and high-scoring Swedish forward, people often compared her to the famous male football player Zlatan Ibrahimović. Some even called her "the female Zlatan."
