Early Life and Family
Lou Nelle was born Lou Nelle Callahan. In 1958, she married Garlington "G. J." Sutton. Together, they raised his daughter, Jeffrey Dean Sutton.
Becoming a State Representative
Lou Nelle Sutton became a leader in her community. Her husband's good friend, Claude Black, encouraged her to get involved in politics. After her husband passed away, Lou Nelle decided to run for his old job. She wanted to represent her district in the Texas House of Representatives. This is where state laws are made. She won the election and served from 1976 to 1987.
Her Business Career
Besides her work in government, Lou Nelle Sutton was also a successful businesswoman. She owned and managed Sutton and Sutton Mortuary. A mortuary is a place that helps families when someone passes away. She also owned Gates of Heaven Memorial Gardens in San Antonio. This is a special place where people are remembered. She ran these businesses until she passed away in July 1994. She is buried next to her husband in the memorial gardens.
