Lou West's Football Journey

Playing Days

Lou West played college football at the University of Cincinnati from 1973 to 1976. He was a defensive back for the Cincinnati Bearcats. After his time there, he was chosen by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1977 NFL draft. This was a big step for him!

Coaching Career

After playing, Lou West became a football coach. He worked with many different college teams over the years. He started as a graduate assistant at Arizona in 1977.

He coached defensive backs for several teams, including Middle Tennessee, Minnesota, and Kansas. He also coached at his old team, Cincinnati, in different roles like defensive backs and outside linebackers coach.

Defensive Coordinator Roles

Lou West also served as a defensive coordinator. This means he was in charge of the team's defense. He was the defensive coordinator for the Toledo team from 2001 to 2004. Later, he was also a defensive coordinator at Garden City from 2011 to 2012.

Head Coach at Indiana State

From 2005 to 2007, Lou West was the head football coach at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana. During his time as head coach, the team had an overall record of 1 win and 25 losses.

Later Coaching Years

After Indiana State, he continued coaching. He worked with teams like Rose-Hulman, Mississippi Delta, and Alabama State. His last known coaching role was as the co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, where he coached from 2017 to 2021.
