About the Loudville Church
Where is Louds Island?
Louds Island is located off the coast of Bristol, Maine. It sits on the west side of Muscongus Bay, close to the village of Round Pond. People first settled on the island in the 1750s. By 1798, about 150 people lived there.
Over time, most people moved away from the island. By the mid-1800s, it became a place mainly for summer visitors. Before the Loudville Church was built in 1913, Louds Island did not have its own church.
What Does the Church Look Like?
The Loudville Church is made of wood. It has an L-shape and is about one and a half stories tall. The roof has a special cross-gable design. The outside of the church is covered with shingles. It stands on a strong concrete foundation.
A tall, three-story tower rises from the corner of the L-shape. This tower has a pointy, pyramid-shaped roof. The church has some simple Gothic style details. For example, one side of the church has a special arched window with three parts.
A New Start for an Old School
The story of the Loudville Church actually begins on Malaga Island. This island is located in Maine's Casco Bay. In the 1800s, a community lived on Malaga Island. In 1908, a school was built there to help the children.
Later, the community on Malaga Island moved away. The school building was then given to the Maine Seacoast Missionary Society. This group raised money to move the school to Louds Island. The wood from the old school was used to build the Loudville Church.
The church was designed by Milton Stratton. He was an architect from Maine who worked a lot around the Mount Desert Island area. Today, the Louds Island Association takes care of the building. They hold meetings and summer church services there.
