Lough Finn (Irish: Loch Finne) is a beautiful freshwater lough or lake located in County Donegal, Ireland. It's a special place with a fascinating history and a famous railway nearby.

The name of the lough, along with the nearby village of Fintown, comes from an old Irish legend. It's said to be named after a brave mythological woman called Finngeal. She sadly drowned in the lake while trying to rescue her wounded brother, Feargamhain. The water from Lough Finn flows out into the River Finn.

Where is Lough Finn?

Lough Finn is nestled in the scenic landscapes of County Donegal, in the northwest part of Ireland. It's a long, narrow lake, stretching about 5 kilometers (3 miles) in length. At its widest point, it's about 0.5 kilometers (0.3 miles) across.

The lake covers an area of about 2.5 square kilometers (1 square mile). It sits at an elevation of about 169 meters (554 feet) above sea level. This means it's quite high up in the hills, offering amazing views of the surrounding countryside.

The Legend of Lough Finn

The story of Finngeal and Feargamhain is an important part of the local history. Finngeal was a strong and caring sister. When her brother, Feargamhain, was hurt, she tried to save him. The legend says she entered the lake to help him, but tragically, she drowned.

Because of her bravery and sacrifice, the lake was named "Loch Finne" in Irish, which means "Finn's Lake." This legend has been passed down through generations and adds a magical touch to the lake's natural beauty.

Fintown and Its Famous Railway

Right next to Lough Finn is the charming village of Fintown. This village shares its name with the lake and is a popular spot for visitors. One of the most exciting things about Fintown is its heritage railway.

The Fintown Railway runs along the shore of Lough Finn. It's a historic railway line that used to be part of the County Donegal Railways Joint Committee. Today, it's a popular tourist attraction. You can take a ride on the train and enjoy incredible views of the lake and the mountains. It's a unique way to experience the beauty of this part of Ireland.
