Louis de Bourbon (born October 1612 – died 6 August 1669) was an important French nobleman. He was the Duke of Mercœur and later became the second Duke of Vendôme. Louis was the grandson of Henry IV of France, a famous French king, and Gabrielle d'Estrées. He took over the title of Duke of Vendôme in 1665, after his father passed away.
Louis's Life Story
Louis was the son of César de Bourbon, who was the Duke of Vendôme, and Françoise de Lorraine. His mother was the daughter of Philippe Emmanuel, Duke of Mercœur.
Louis had a career in the military. He also served as the Governor of Provence from 1653 to 1669. This meant he was in charge of that region of France.
After his wife died in 1657, Louis decided to join the church. He became a cardinal, which is a high-ranking official in the Catholic Church. He also served as a legate for France, acting as a special representative. As a cardinal, he was known as the cardinal de Vendôme.
Louis's Family
Louis married Laura Mancini on 4 February 1651. Laura was the niece of Cardinal Mazarin, a very powerful person in France at the time.
Louis and Laura had three children:
- Louis Joseph de Bourbon (1654–1712): He became the Duke of Vendôme and a Marshal of France. A Marshal of France was a very high military rank. Louis Joseph married Marie Anne de Bourbon, but they did not have any children.
- Philippe de Bourbon (1655–1727): He was known as le prieur de Vendôme. He was the last Duke of Vendôme from their family line. Philippe never married and had no children.
- Jules César de Bourbon (1657–1660): He died when he was a baby.
