Louis Dupré (1697–1774) was a famous French ballet dancer. He was also a ballet master, which means he directed and taught ballet. Dupré was a very important ballet teacher during his time.

Life of a Dance Legend

Early Years and Rise to Fame

Louis Dupré likely started dancing as a child. He was known as "petit Dupré" (little Dupré) back then. In 1714, he officially began his career at the Académie royale de musique in Paris, France. This was a very important place for music and dance.

By 1739, Dupré became the ballet master there. This meant he was in charge of the ballet performances and dancers. Between 1725 and 1730, he also traveled a lot. He put on many ballet shows in cities like London and Dresden. He even performed for the Polish royal family.

A Master Teacher

Louis Dupré was also a top teacher at the Opéra de Paris dance school. He taught there until 1743. Many of his students became very famous dancers themselves. Some of his well-known students included Marie-Anne de Camargo, Gaétan Vestris, and Jean-Georges Noverre.

People really admired Dupré's dancing skills. He was known for his amazing technique. He was a key figure in French "belle danse", which means "beautiful dance." During his life, people called him "le Grand Dupré" (the Great Dupré). They even called him the "god of the dance" because he was so good!

Ballets for Students

Louis Dupré also created several ballets. He made these special performances for the students at the Collège Louis le Grand. This was a famous school in Paris.
