About Louis Hayes Petit
Early Life and Education
Louis Hayes Petit was born on November 9, 1774. His father, John Lewis Petit, was a doctor who passed away in 1780. Louis went to Newcombe's School for his early education.
Later, he was prepared for university by a teacher named Samuel Parlby. Louis then attended Queens' College, Cambridge. He earned his first degree (B.A.) in 1796 and a master's degree (M.A.) in 1799.
A Career in Law and Politics
In 1801, Louis Hayes Petit became a barrister. This means he was qualified to argue cases in higher courts. He joined Lincoln's Inn, which is one of the professional associations for barristers in London. He worked as a barrister until 1821.
In 1827, Louis was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area of Ripon. He got this position thanks to a family friend, Lancelot Shadwell, who helped manage the local elections. Louis supported changes to how Parliament worked, known as parliamentary reform. He was re-elected in 1831. However, he did not run for election in 1832 because he no longer had the support of Elizabeth Lawrence, who was an important person in the constituency.
A Man of Many Interests
Louis Hayes Petit was interested in many different subjects. He became a member of several important groups, called "fellows" of these societies:
- The Society of Antiquaries of London (in 1803), which studies history and old things.
- The Royal Society (in 1807), which is a famous group for scientists.
- The Linnaean Society, which focuses on the study of plants and animals.
- The Geological Society, which studies the Earth's rocks and structure.
- The Royal Astronomical Society, which is dedicated to studying space and stars.
