Ludwig I (born February 9, 1763 – died March 30, 1830) became the Grand Duke of Baden on December 8, 1818. He was the uncle of the previous Grand Duke, Karl Ludwig Friedrich. Ludwig's death meant that his direct family line within the House of Baden came to an end. His half-brother, Leopold, took over as the next Grand Duke.

Supporting Education and Learning

Ludwig I cared a lot about education and learning. In 1820, he made sure that the University of Freiburg could continue to operate. After his help, the university was renamed the Albert-Ludwig University in his honor.

Founding a Technical School

In 1825, Ludwig also started the Polytechnic Hochschule Karlsruhe. This school is a very important technical college. It is actually the oldest technical school in all of Germany.

Grand Duke Ludwig's Legacy

Ludwig I worked closely with a famous architect named Friedrich Weinbrenner. Together, they were responsible for building many of the beautiful classical-style buildings in the city center of Karlsruhe. They also built the famous pyramid in the city.

Succession and Family

When Ludwig I died in 1830, there were many rumors about his death. Since he did not have any official children to inherit his title, the leadership of Baden passed to the children of his father's second marriage. This change in succession was an important moment for the Grand Duchy of Baden.

The Mystery of Kaspar Hauser

After Ludwig's death, people talked a lot about a mysterious young man named Kaspar Hauser. He appeared in 1828, seemingly from nowhere. Some people wondered if Hauser was actually the first son of the future Grand Duke Karl. This child had died under strange circumstances seventeen years earlier. Even today, some people still wonder about this mystery.
