Louis Philippe, comte de Ségur (born December 10, 1753 – died August 27, 1830) was an important French diplomat and historian. He lived during a very exciting time in French history, including the French Revolution and the rise of Napoleon.

Life Story of Louis Philippe de Ségur

Louis Philippe was born in Paris. His father was Philippe Henri, marquis de Ségur. Louis Philippe joined the army in 1769. He fought in the American Revolutionary War in 1781. He was a colonel working with a French general named Rochambeau.

Diplomat in Russia

In 1784, Louis Philippe was sent to Saint Petersburg, Russia. He was a special representative for France. He became good friends with Empress Catherine the Great and even wrote plays for her theater.

While in Russia, he helped create a trade agreement in 1787. This agreement was very good for France. In the same year, he traveled with Catherine the Great on her trip to the Crimea. He returned to Paris in 1789.

During the French Revolution and Napoleon's Time

When the French Revolution began, Ségur supported it. In 1791, he was sent to Berlin to represent France, but he was not welcomed there. After a disagreement that led to a duel, he had to leave Berlin. He then stayed out of public life for a while.

In 1801, Napoleon asked him to join the government. Ségur became a member of the council of state and a senator in 1813.

Later Years and Family

In 1814, Ségur voted to remove Napoleon from power. He then joined the Chamber of Peers under King Louis XVIII. However, when Napoleon returned for a short time (called the Hundred Days), Ségur joined him. Because of this, he lost his jobs in 1815.

He got his positions back in 1819. He also supported the July Revolution in 1830, which brought a new king to power. Louis Philippe de Ségur died shortly after this revolution in Paris.

Louis Philippe married Antoinette Élisabeth d'Aguesseau in 1777. They had three sons and one daughter:

  • Laure Antoinette de Ségur (1778–1812)
  • Octave-Henri Gabriel, comte de Ségur (1779–1818), who was a soldier.
  • Philippe Paul, comte de Ségur (1780–1873), who became a general and a historian, just like his father.
  • Olivier Alexandre de Ségur (1790–1791)
