Louis Renault (born May 21, 1843 – died February 8, 1918) was a French expert in law and a teacher. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1907, sharing it with Ernesto Teodoro Moneta. The Nobel Peace Prize is given to people who have done the most for peace and brotherhood between nations.

Early Life and Education

Louis Renault was born in Autun, a town in France. He loved learning about law from a young age. He studied hard to become a legal expert.

A Career in Law and Teaching

From 1868 to 1873, Louis Renault taught Roman law and business law at the University of Dijon. Roman law is based on the ancient laws of Rome. Business law deals with rules for trade and companies.

In 1873, he moved to the University of Paris. There, he became a professor in the law department. By 1881, he was teaching international law. This type of law deals with rules and agreements between different countries.

Advisor to the French Government

In 1890, Louis Renault got a special job. He became a "jurisconsult" for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A jurisconsult is like a legal advisor. His job was to check if France's plans with other countries followed international law.

He attended many important meetings for France. These included the two Hague Conventions (1899 and 1907). These meetings were held to create rules for warfare and peace. He also attended the London Naval Conference (1908–1909). This conference set rules for navies during wartime.

Solving International Disputes

Louis Renault was also very good at helping countries solve their disagreements. This is called being an "arbitrator." He helped with several famous cases:

  • The Japanese House Tax case in 1905.
  • The Casa Blanca Case in 1909.
  • The Sarvarkar Case in 1911.
  • The Carthage case in 1913.
  • The Manouba case in 1913.

In these cases, he helped find peaceful solutions.

His Writings and Legacy

Louis Renault wrote many articles and books about international law. He also worked with his friend C. Lyon-Caen on books about business law. They wrote a large collection of these laws.

In 1879, he published "Introduction to the Study of International Law." Later, in 1917, he wrote "First Violations of International Law by Germany." This book discussed how Germany broke its promises by invading Belgium and Luxembourg at the start of World War I.

Louis Renault's work helped shape how countries interact today. He showed the importance of following international rules for peace.
