Louis Lawrence Smith (born 15 May 1830 – died 8 July 1910) was an important Australian doctor and politician. He was known for his unique medical practice and for serving in the government of Victoria.

Early Life and Education

Louis Lawrence Smith was born in London, England. His father, Edward Tyrell Smith, owned a theatre, and his mother was Madeline Hanette Gengoult. Louis went to school at St Saviour's Grammar School in London. He also studied medicine in Paris, France, at the Ecole de Médecine, before continuing his medical training at Westminster Hospital in London.

Moving to Australia and Medical Work

In 1852, Louis Smith traveled to Victoria, Australia, on a ship called the Oriental. He worked as the ship's surgeon during the journey. When he arrived in Australia, he tried mining for gold for a short time. After that, he started a medical practice in Melbourne. His medical practice became very popular, even though his methods were sometimes seen as unusual for the time.

A Career in Politics

Louis Smith also had a long career in politics. In 1859, he was chosen by voters to join the Victorian Legislative Assembly. This is like being a member of parliament for the state of Victoria. He represented the area of South Bourke until 1865.

Later, he served again as a politician for the area of Richmond from 1871 to 1874, and again from 1877 to 1883. He also represented Mornington from 1886 to 1894. From 1881 to 1883, he was a minister in the government, helping to make important decisions for Victoria.

Family Life

Louis Smith was married twice. His first wife was Ellen, and they had six children together. After Ellen passed away, he married Marion Jane Higgins in 1883 in East Melbourne. Louis and Marion had five children. He passed away in Melbourne in 1910.

Some of his children also became well-known. His daughter, Louise Hanson-Dyer, became a famous music publisher and supported the arts. His son, Sir Harold Gengoult Smith, became the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, which is a very important role in the city.
