Louise Renaud (born August 3, 1922 – died October 19, 2020) was a talented Canadian artist. She was known for her painting and dancing. Louise was also a part of a special art group called Les Automatistes.

Her Life as an Artist

Louise Renaud was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She loved art from a young age. From 1938 to 1942, she studied at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal. This was a famous art school in Montreal.

Later, Louise moved to New York City in the United States. There, she attended the Dramatic Workshop and Studio from 1943 to 1945. While in New York, she also worked as a governess. She took care of the children of a famous art dealer named Pierre Matisse. Pierre was the son of the well-known artist Henri Matisse.

Louise was also a trained dancer. Her friend, Françoise Sullivan, who was also a dancer, stayed with her while studying dance in New York.

The Automatistes Group

Louise Renaud was a member of an important art group called Les Automatistes. This group was made up of artists from Quebec, Canada. They believed in creating art freely, without too many rules. They wanted their art to come from their subconscious mind.

In 1948, Louise was one of the artists who signed a very important paper. It was called the Refus Global. This paper was like a statement from the Automatistes. It called for big changes in art and society in Quebec. It was a brave and bold step for the artists.

Her Sisters

Louise Renaud came from an artistic family. Her sisters were also very creative. Her sister Jeanne Renaud became a famous choreographer. A choreographer is someone who creates dance routines. Her other sister, Thérèse Renaud, was a talented writer.

Later Years and Death

Louise Renaud lived a long and artistic life. She passed away on October 19, 2020. She was 98 years old. She died at her home in Berkeley, California.
