The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame & Northwest Louisiana History Museum is an exciting place located in Natchitoches, Louisiana. It's part of the Louisiana State Museum family. This museum actually has two main parts for visitors to explore!

One part is the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. This section is all about the amazing history of sports in Louisiana. It celebrates the achievements of more than 300 Louisiana athletes, coaches, and other important sports figures. You can learn about their incredible journeys and successes.

The other part is the Northwest Louisiana History Museum. This section dives into the cultural traditions and history of the area. It covers everything from the very first Native American groups who lived there to the present day.

The museum opened its doors in a brand-new building in 2013. This special building cost $23 million to create. It was designed by a company called Trahan Architects from New Orleans. The building looks unique with its wavy stone insides and earthy colors on the outside. These features were designed to remind people of the nearby Cane River Lake.

The Museum's Story

How the Sports Hall of Fame Began

The idea for the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame started a long time ago, in 1958. It was first created by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. However, for many years, it didn't have its own building.

Finding a Home for History

In 1971, the city of Natchitoches and Northwestern State University helped solve this problem. They offered a space on the university campus for the Hall of Fame. For 40 years, the growing collection of sports items and memories was kept in a building called Prather Coliseum.

A New Home for Champions

Finally, on June 28, 2013, the new $23 million Hall of Fame building officially opened. This new home allowed the museum to properly display all the wonderful sports history and cultural artifacts for everyone to enjoy.
