North Louisiana Historical Association facts for kids
The North Louisiana Historical Association is a group that started in 1952. Its main goal is to help people learn about and understand the history of North Louisiana. They want everyone to appreciate the past of this important part of Louisiana.
History of the Association
The North Louisiana Historical Association was created in 1952. Two people named D. H. Perkins and A. W. Shaw started the group. They held their first meeting at Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Another important person who helped start the association was W. Darrell Overdyke. He was a history professor at Centenary College. Professor Overdyke was very good at studying old homes built in the South before the American Civil War. These homes are sometimes called "antebellum" homes.
The association gives out special prizes called the Overdyke Awards. These awards are named after Professor Overdyke. They are given to the best research papers published in the association's journal.
The group publishes its own journal, which is like a special magazine, called North Louisiana History. This journal also helps people learn about and appreciate the history of North Louisiana. One of the people in charge of the association is the editor of this journal. Their job is to find interesting articles and make sure they are clear and correct before they are published.
The North Louisiana Historical Association keeps its important historical documents and records at the Noel Memorial Library at Louisiana State University in Shreveport. This means the library is a safe place where all their valuable papers and information about North Louisiana's history are stored.
