Lourdes Cirlot Valenzuela (born in 1949) is a Spanish expert in art theory and art history. She is also a researcher who studies many different parts of 20th and 21st century art. She has written books about Avant-garde art and many articles for journals and collections of writings.

Early Life and Education

Lourdes Cirlot is the daughter of Juan Eduardo Cirlot, a Spanish poet and art critic. Her sister, Victoria Cirlot, is also a scholar. In 2011, the two sisters worked together on art shows about their father's work. These shows were called El Mundo de Juan Eduardo Cirlot and Juan Eduardo Cirlot, The Imaginary Room.

Lourdes Cirlot studied at the University of Barcelona. She earned her first degree in Geography and History in 1973. Later, in 1980, she received her Ph.D. in Art History from the same university.

Career in Academia

Lourdes Cirlot began teaching at the University of Barcelona in 1974. She worked in the Department of History of Art. In 1997, she became a full professor of Art History.

She also held important leadership roles at the university. From 1996 to 1999, she was a vice-dean in the faculty of Geography and History. From 1999 to 2005, she was the director of the Department of Art History. Since 1999, she has been the main researcher for a group called "Art, Architecture and Digital Society" at the University of Barcelona. In 2011, she was the Vice-Rector of Arts, Culture and Heritage for the university.

Art Research and Digital Work

Lourdes Cirlot is interested in many areas of art history. She has mostly focused on art from the 20th and 21st centuries. Her research on 20th-century art includes Catalan Art, Spanish art, and international art movements. These movements include Dadaism, surrealism, abstract art, and pop art.

After starting the "Art, Architecture and Digital Society" research group, she began to study New Media and digital technology. A big part of her research now looks at how electronic and digital technology affects modern culture and society. She explores this topic from many different angles.

As part of this work, she helped create the Virtual Museum of the University of Barcelona. She has also helped organize important conferences on these subjects. Lourdes Cirlot has published her work in Spanish, English, and Catalan. She has also shared her research at international conferences.

Awards and Recognition

In 2011, Lourdes Cirlot received the Golden Medal from the faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Barcelona. This award recognized her important contributions to the scientific community.
