Her Career as a Writer
Lourdes Ortiz taught art history at the Royal School of Dramatic Art in Madrid. She was even the director of this school from 1991 to 1993. She also wrote for newspapers like El País, El Mundo, and Diario 16. In these papers, she shared her thoughts on social and political issues.
In 1999, she started working on a TV show called "Así es la Vida." This means "This is How Life Is" in English. The show was part of the morning news on the Telecinco network. Even though she worked in news, Lourdes Ortiz has said she loves writing novels the most. She feels that novels show different parts of her own time. She also finds writing novels more challenging and rewarding.
Famous Books and Plays
Lourdes Ortiz is known for writing many different kinds of works. These include plays, poems, essays, and fiction.
One of her popular novels is Luz de memoria (1976). This book tells the story of a man who goes to a hospital for mental health after a difficult time. She later wrote Picadura mortal (1979). In this story, a detective named Bárbara Arenas looks into a missing businessman case in the Canary Islands.
Her next novel, En días como éstos (1981), talks about serious issues like violence. Ortiz then published Magpie (1982). This is a historical novel about Urraca of León, a queen from long ago. The story focuses on conversations between the queen and a monk who brings her food while she is imprisoned. In this book, Lourdes Ortiz used old-fashioned language. This helped to make the story feel like it was truly from medieval times. It also helped to show how strong and determined the queen was.
Another well-known work by Ortiz is Archángeles (1986). This book makes you think about how time passes. It also looks back with a bit of humor at people who were important in Spain during the 1960s.
