Lourdes Ortiz (born in 1943 in Madrid, Spain) is a Spanish writer. She writes many different types of books, including novels, plays, poems, and essays. She has also worked for several newspapers and magazines. These include El País, El Mundo, and Diario 16. In her newspaper work, she often wrote about social and political topics.
Early Life and School
Lourdes Ortiz went to a convent school. There, she studied philosophy and literature until she was sixteen years old. After that, she went to the Complutense University of Madrid. At the university, she studied geography and history.
Writing Career
Ortiz taught art history at the Royal School of Dramatic Art of Madrid. She was even the director of the school from 1991 to 1993. She also wrote for newspapers and magazines like El País and El Mundo. She wrote opinion pieces about important social and political issues.
In 1999, she started working on a TV show called "Así es la Vida." This means "This is How Life Is." The show was part of the morning news on the Telecinco network. Even though she worked in news, Ortiz has said she loves writing novels more. She feels that novels show different sides of her own time. She also finds writing novels more challenging and rewarding.
Famous Books and Plays
Lourdes Ortiz is known for writing many different kinds of works. These include dramas, poetry, essays, and fiction.
- Luz de memoria (1976) is one of her popular novels. It tells the story of a man who goes to a hospital for mental health after a difficult time.
- She then published Picadura mortal (1979). In this book, a detective named Bárbara Arenas looks for a missing businessman. The story takes place in the Canary Islands.
- Her next novel, En días como éstos (1981), talks about serious issues like terrorism and violence.
- Ortiz also wrote Magpie (1982). This is a historical novel about Urraca of León, a queen from the past. The story focuses on conversations between the queen and a monk who brings her food. Ortiz used old-fashioned language to make the book feel like medieval times. She also showed the queen as a strong and ambitious person.
- Another well-known work is Archángeles (1986). This book makes you think about how time passes. It also looks back at people who were important in Spain during the 1960s.
Other Works
Lourdes Ortiz has written many other novels. Some of them are Camas (1989) and La fuente de la vida (1995). Her novel La fuente de la vida was a finalist for the Planet Prize, a big award.
She has also written several plays. These include Las murals de Jericó (1980) and Fedra (1984). Ortiz has worked on many different publications. She has also translated books from French. She has always been involved in politics as well.
