Lovett, Georgia facts for kids
Lovett is a small place in eastern Laurens County, Georgia, United States. It is known as an "unincorporated community." This means it doesn't have its own local government, like a mayor or town council. Instead, the county government helps manage things there. Lovett is also part of the larger Dublin area.
The Story of Lovett
How Lovett Began
Lovett started to grow in 1884. This was when a new railroad line was built through the area. Railroads were very important back then. They helped people travel and moved goods from one place to another. New communities often grew up around railroad stops. Lovett was named after a man named Warren P. Lovett. He was an important official who worked for the railroad company.
Becoming and Un-becoming a Town
In 1889, Lovett officially became a town. This meant it got its own local government and could make its own rules. The Georgia General Assembly, which is the group of lawmakers for the state of Georgia, made this possible. They gave Lovett a special document called a "municipal charter." This charter was like a permission slip that allowed Lovett to act as an official town. However, in 1995, this charter was removed. This meant Lovett was no longer an official town and went back to being an unincorporated community.
