Lowake is a small, unincorporated community in Concho County, Texas, United States. Being "unincorporated" means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's governed by the county. In 2000, about 40 people lived in Lowake.

Discovering Lowake's Past
Lowake was started in 1909. This happened when a railway line was built from Miles to Paint Rock. Lowake was created right in the middle of this new railway path.
How Lowake Got Its Name
The community was named after two farmers. Their names were Lowe and Schlake. They both gave land for the town to be built.
Early Days and Growth
Lowake got its own post office in 1909. In 1925, only ten people were reported to live there. By 1927, the population grew to 50. But in 1933, it went back down to ten people. In 1936, Lowake had several buildings and a few businesses. The community reached its biggest population in 1961, with 120 residents.
Lowake in the 1960s
By 1963, Lowake had a community center. It also had five businesses, including a very famous steakhouse. People from miles around knew about this steakhouse. The post office was still open too. From 1970 to 2000, the population stayed at about 40 people. Even though it's unincorporated, Lowake still has its own post office with the ZIP code 76855.
Tornadoes in Lowake
Lowake has experienced powerful storms. On May 14, 1995, an F0 tornado hit the community. Years later, on May 18, 2019, a much stronger F3 tornado struck Lowake. This large tornado caused a lot of damage. It destroyed many small buildings and an RV camper. A big metal storage tank was also tossed around. Further along its path, one home lost its roof and outside walls.
Where is Lowake Located?
Lowake is found in the far northwestern part of Concho County. It sits where two roads meet: Farm to Market Road 381 and Farm to Market Road 1929. The community is also located on the Concho River. It is about 9 miles (14 km) northwest of Paint Rock.
Learning in Lowake: Education History
Lowake once had its own school. In 1936, this school taught students from 1st grade all the way up to high school juniors. By 1940, the school had 44 students. There were three teachers working there. In 1955, the Lowake school joined the Paint Rock Independent School District.
