Cotuit Kettleers |
Elizabeth Lowell Park is a famous baseball field in Cotuit, Massachusetts. It is the home field for the Cotuit Kettleers team. This team plays in the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL). Lowell Park is special because it does not have lights for night games. Only two other CCBL ballparks are like this.
A Park with History
The land for Lowell Park was given to the town of Barnstable in 1906. It was donated by members of the Lowell family. There was once a school building on this land. It was called Elizabeth Lowell High School. The school was used until the 1920s. It was later taken down about ten years after that.
The Lowell family had strong ties to Cotuit. One famous member was A. Lawrence Lowell. He was the president of Harvard University for a long time. He had a home in Cotuit. Many other people from Harvard also came to visit. Because of this, Cotuit was sometimes called "Summer Harvard."
Keeping the Park Green
After the school building was removed, the land stayed a baseball field. The Cotuit Athletic Association has taken care of it since the 1940s. This was when the Kettleers team first started.
In 2007, Lowell Park received a big grant. This money came from the Yawkey Foundation. It helped make many important upgrades to the park. More improvements were made over time.
In 2015, more land around the park was bought. This was done to keep the park's natural look. It also stopped any new buildings from being built too close. This effort was called "Keep Lowell Park Green." Bill Richardson supported this campaign. He was a pitcher for the Kettleers in 1967. He later became a United States Ambassador to the United Nations. An ambassador is a person who represents their country in another country or at a big international group like the United Nations.
A Special Place for Baseball
Many people say Lowell Park looks like a scene from a "Norman Rockwell painting." It is also called "a shining, secluded throwback to the golden age of baseball." This means it feels like a classic, old-fashioned baseball field.
The park is surrounded by trees. It is also very close to Cotuit Bay. This natural setting reminds some people of the "Field of Dreams" movie. In that movie, a baseball field appears in a cornfield. Lowell Park feels similar, like it was carved right out of nature.
The Cotuit Kettleers have won many championships at Lowell Park. They have won 17 CCBL championships, which is the most in the league. Many future Major League Baseball players have played here. Some famous names include Will Clark, Joe Girardi, and Chase Utley.
