Discovering Lowly Worm
Lowly Worm is an anthropomorphic earthworm. This means he is an animal who acts and talks like a human. He often wears a dark green Tyrolean hat on his head. This hat is like one Richard Scarry bought in St. Anton in 1950. Scarry often wore it when visiting his publishers.
Lowly's Unique Style
Lowly has a very special outfit. He wears a shoe on the end of his tail. He also has a blue and green tube on his body. This tube looks like a sleeveless shirt and one-legged pants. Underneath, he wears a single "underpant" that covers his clitellum. A bright red bow tie completes his look.
Friends and Adventures
Lowly's best friend is Huckle Cat. They live together in the busy place called Busytown. Lowly drives a cool car shaped like an apple. In some episodes of The Busy World of Richard Scarry and Busytown Mysteries, this car can even fly like a helicopter. You can also see this flying car in the computer games Richard Scarry's Busytown and How Things Work in Busytown.
Lowly goes to school with Huckle and plays with his friends. But he also does things that adults do, like driving his car. Hilda Hippo has a crush on Lowly. He doesn't feel the same way, but he does think of Hilda as a good friend.
Lowly's Popularity
A reviewer from Variety magazine once wrote about The Busy World of Richard Scarry. They said Lowly was "the real star of the series." They liked his funny name and his neat outfit, especially his bow tie and single sneaker. Richard Scarry's wife said that Lowly was her husband's favorite character that he ever created.
A Small Hiccup with Toys
In 1993, Taco Bell gave out about 500,000 Lowly Worm and Huckle Cat finger puppets. Later, Taco Bell decided to recall these puppets. This happened after a few complaints about a minor issue with the toys.
