Luís Mendes de Vasconcellos (born around 1542 – died March 7, 1623) was an important Portuguese nobleman. He held two major roles in his life. He was the Governor of Angola from 1617 to 1621. Later, he became the 55th Grand Master of the Order of Saint John from 1622 to 1623. He was also a writer.

Early Life and Background
Luís Mendes de Vasconcellos was born in Évora, Portugal. This was around the year 1542. His parents were Francisco Mendes de Vasconcelos and Isabel Pais de Oliveira. His family had a long history in Portugal.
A Time as a Writer
Before his political and military career, Luís Mendes de Vasconcellos worked as a writer. He was active in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. He wrote from 1608 to 1612.
Governor of Angola
In 1617, Vasconcellos took on a very important job. He became the Governor of the Portuguese colony of Angola. This was a challenging role.
Challenges in Angola
During his time as governor, he faced a local uprising. He successfully put down this revolt in 1618. His term as governor lasted for three years. During this period, many people from Angola were forced into slavery. They were then sent across the ocean to the Americas.
Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller
Luís Mendes de Vasconcellos was also a respected member of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. This was a famous military and religious order. They were known for their bravery.
He was well-known for his courage in sea battles. He led several naval missions against the Ottoman Empire. These battles were very important at the time.
Becoming Grand Master
On September 17, 1622, he was chosen as the Grand Master of the Order. This happened after the previous Grand Master, Alof de Wignacourt, passed away. Vasconcellos was the first Portuguese Grand Master in Malta. The last Portuguese Grand Master had been Afonso of Portugal.
Short Term as Grand Master
Luís Mendes de Vasconcellos served as Grand Master for less than six months. He died on March 7, 1623. After his death, Antoine de Paule became the new Grand Master.
Family Life
Luís Mendes de Vasconcellos had a son named Joanne Mendes de Vasconcelos. His son also became a notable figure. Joanne Mendes de Vasconcelos later fought in the Portuguese Restoration War.
