Lucketts is a charming place with a rich history. It's known for its friendly community and unique local spots. This area offers a glimpse into the past while still being a lively place today.
A Look Back in Time
Lucketts has had a few different names over the years. When it was first settled, people called it "Black Swamp." This was because of the many black oak trees that grew there.
Later, from the late 1700s to the mid-1800s, it was known as "Goresville." This name came from a well-known local landowner named Thomas Gore. Finally, in 1865, the community officially became "Lucketts." The historic Lucketts School is a very important building here. It is even listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Where is Lucketts?
Lucketts is about 7 miles (11 km) north of Leesburg. It is also about 18 miles (29 km) south of Frederick, Maryland. The Potomac River flows between Lucketts and Frederick. You can find it about 4 miles (6.4 km) north on Route 15.
You might hear train whistles often in Lucketts. The MARC commuter train stops frequently in Point of Rocks, which is on the Maryland side of the river. Freight trains also pass through, and their whistles can be heard at night and in the early morning.
What You'll Find in Lucketts
The center of Lucketts is easy to spot. It's marked by the traffic light where Route 15, Lucketts Road, and Stumptown Road meet. Around this intersection, you'll find several interesting places.
There are antique stores where you can explore unique treasures. You'll also see a gas station, some homes, and a fire station. The Lucketts Elementary School is located here too. A cell phone tower also stands nearby, helping everyone stay connected.
Fun Things to Do in Lucketts
Lucketts is famous for its annual fair, which takes place every August. This fair is a great place to find crafts and delicious food. The Lucketts Elementary School PTA often sells tasty hand-churned ice cream there.
The Lucketts Community Center is a very active spot. It used to be the original wooden Lucketts School building. Today, it offers many activities for the community. There's a day care service and a pre-school for younger children. Adults can also join in various activities. Since 1974, the center has hosted popular bluegrass concerts. These concerts happen every Saturday night at 7:00 PM, from October through April.
