The Story of Lucknow

How Lucknow Got Its Name

The community of Lucknow in Pennsylvania was named after a famous city in India. That city is also called Lucknow, and it's located in Uttar Pradesh, India. This naming happened because of a big event in India's history called the Indian Rebellion of 1857. During this rebellion, Indian freedom fighters fought against the East India Company army.

The name "Sepoy" is also connected to Lucknow. A Sepoy was an Indian foot soldier who fought alongside the British during the Relief of Lucknow in India.

Early Industry and the Forge

A man named John W. Reily worked in the iron industry. He built and ran a place called the Lucknow Forge for about 35 years. A forge is a workshop where metal is heated and shaped. The houses you see along Lucknow Road were first built as homes for the workers at this forge. These were known as "company homes."

From Forge to Rail Yard

Later in the 1800s, John Reily moved to work on a dairy farm. He sold the Lucknow Forge to the Pennsylvania Railroad. The railroad turned the site into a plant for welding (joining) rails together. This was needed for their growing rail yard nearby. This new rail yard became known as the Lucknow Yard. Today, it is called the Harrisburg Intermodal Yard. The Pennsylvania Railroad also had a passenger train station at Lucknow, which was about 4 miles north of Harrisburg.
