Where is Luco de Bordón?
This town sits high up, about 811 meters (2,661 feet) above sea level, in the Sierra de Bordón mountains. It's in the Teruel province, right near the border with Valencia. You can reach Luco de Bordón from the town of Villores using roads like CV-119 and TE-8402. The main part of Luco de Bordón is built on a hilltop. It's surrounded by a ravine and is close to the Bordón River, which flows into the bigger Guadalope River.
The Story of Luco de Bordón
The name "Luco" comes from an old Latin word, Lucus, which means 'forest'. The town's history began a long time ago, around the year 1196. This is when it was first written about in official documents. At that time, the first leader of Castellote, Gascon Castellot, gave the town and its land to others. This land included several towns like Abenfigo, Bordón, Luco, Santolea, Seno, Las Cuevas de Cañart, Ladruñán, Dos Torres de Mercader, Las Parras, and Torremocha.
In 1272, Luco was connected to Bordón. Then, on January 4, 1282, a group called the Knights Templar officially created towns in different places, including Castellote, Bordón, Las Cuevas de Cañart, Santolea, and Seno.
Later, in 1367, Bordón and Luco, along with other towns, became independent from Castellote. Even later, in 1535, Luco became independent from Bordón. Around the year 1400, a local priest named Don Juan Calvo built a chapel. He gave this chapel to the people of Luco, and it later became the main church of the town.
In the 1970s, several towns like Cuevas Cañart, Ladruñán, Luco, Dos Torres de Mercader, and Santolea became part of Castellote. This meant they were no longer independent towns.
