Eva Lucy Harwood (born January 1, 1893 – died October 24, 1972) was a British artist. She was famous for her beautiful landscape paintings. Most of her art showed the countryside of East Anglia and Suffolk in England.
About Eva Harwood
Eva Harwood was born in a place called Belstead, near Ipswich. When she was very young, her family moved to East Bergholt.
Her Journey to Art
When Eva was young, a medical procedure affected her right side. This meant she could no longer follow her dream of becoming a professional pianist. Instead, she decided to focus on art.
She joined the Slade School of Fine Art in London before World War I began. Later, in 1937, she studied at the East Anglican School of Printing and Drawing. This school was in Dedham and was run by an artist named Cedric Morris.
When the school moved to Benton End in Hadleigh in 1940, Eva stayed with them. She continued to be involved with the school for many years.
Her Artistic Style
Even though her right side was affected, Eva Harwood learned to paint using only her left hand. She created many still-life and landscape paintings. She especially loved painting the area around her home in Upper Layham, Suffolk. She also painted scenes from other parts of Britain and even from abroad.
Eva often used bright, lively colors in her artwork. She described her style as Post-Impressionist. This means her paintings focused on capturing feelings and light, rather than just showing things exactly as they looked.
Exhibitions and Legacy
After her death, a special exhibition of her work was held in 1975. This show was at The Minories art center in Colchester. More exhibitions of her paintings followed at Sally Hunter Fine Art.
Today, you can see examples of Eva Harwood's art in important collections. Both the Ipswich Museum and the Colchester Art Society own some of her beautiful paintings.
