Lucy Colgate Newell (born September 29, 1906 – died May 22, 1987) was a talented Australian artist. She was well-known for her beautiful paintings and her unique way of printing designs onto fabric.

About Lucy Newell

Lucy Newell was born in 1906 in a town called Castlemaine, in Victoria. Her mother, Alice Newell, was also an artist, and her father, Francis Sargent Newell, was a lawyer. Growing up, Lucy was surrounded by art and creativity.

Early Life and Art School

Lucy went to St Catherine's School. Even as a young student, she loved art. She took special art classes on Saturday mornings at Castlemaine Technical School. Later, she also learned watercolour painting from Miss Ethel Crook.

Lucy then studied art for five years at the famous National Gallery School. While she learned a lot, she discovered that she didn't really enjoy painting portraits (pictures of people) or using oil paints. Instead, she found a new passion.

A Love for Textile Printing

Lucy found her true artistic calling in textile printing. This meant she would create designs using linocut, which is a way of carving a design into a piece of linoleum. She would then use these carved blocks to print her designs onto cotton fabric. This unique method allowed her to create amazing patterns and artworks on textiles.

Her Art in Collections

Lucy's mother, Alice, helped start the Castlemaine Art Gallery. Years later, Lucy's artwork was shown there in 1971. The gallery also has some of her art in its collection.

Her work is also kept in other important places. You can find her art at the National Gallery of Australia, which is a very important art museum. Some of her pieces are also at Buda Historic Home & Garden, which is a historic house and garden.

Later Years

For a short time, Lucy took a break from her art to care for her parents as they grew older. After this, she moved to Woodend. She spent ten years there, focusing on creating the art she truly loved. Lucy passed away in Woodend on May 22, 1987, at the age of 80.
