Lucy Elizabeth Drummond Sale-Barker (1841–1892) was a British writer who wrote many books for children. She was also known by her first married name, Lucy Villiers. She started her writing career by contributing articles to magazines. Around 1872, she began writing regularly for young readers. Between 1874 and 1888, she published over forty books for kids. Many of these stories were first written for her own children. Some of her books had fun titles like Little Bright Eyes' Picture Book. She was also the editor of Little Wide-Awake, a popular children's magazine, from when it started in 1874 until she passed away. She even wrote the poems for Kate Greenaway's famous Birthday Book for Children (1880).

Her Early Life and Family

Lucy Elizabeth Drummond Davies was born in 1841. Her father, Francis Henry Davies, worked for a court. Her mother, Lady Lucy Clementina Drummond de Melfort, was also a writer. Lucy's mother was the sister of George Drummond, who became the 5th Earl of Perth.

Marriages and Family Life

In 1858, Lucy Davies married Lieutenant-Colonel James Villiers. They had a daughter named Clementina. Sadly, Lieutenant-Colonel Villiers died in India in 1862.

On August 10, 1865, Lucy married John Sale Barker. He was a barrister, which is a type of lawyer. Her mother later lived with them until she passed away. Lucy Sale-Barker died on May 4, 1892, at her home in Penge.

Children from her first marriage

Her daughter, Clementina Georgina Lucy Drummond Villiers, was born in 1859. She married Thomas Dyer Edwardes in 1878. This couple survived the sinking of the famous ship, the RMS Titanic.

Grandchildren

Clementina's daughter was (Lucy) Noel (Martha) Dyer Edwards. She was born on Christmas Day in 1878. In 1900, she married John Norman Leslie, Earl of Rothes. She later became known as the Countess of Rothes. She was also a survivor of the Titanic.

Children from her second marriage

Lucy and John Sale Barker had children, including Lilian Drummond Sale Barker and Cecilia Emala A Drummond Sale Barker.

Grandchildren

One of their grandchildren was Audrey Durell Drummond-Sale-Barker (1903–1994). She was also known as "Wendy." She was a brave woman pilot who flew Spitfire planes during World War II. She was honored with a medal for her service.
